smart phone screen so big




I head up the Consumer Devices group at Current Analysis, where we have two complementary products: data – we track product pricing, availability, and specs – and analysis – our assessment on how competitive various products and initiatives are. I recently had a client ask a question that crossed both: how many smartphones today have super-sized screens, and how big is too big?

The data answer is simple: 13% of the smartphones at the four national carriers in the U.S. have screens 4” or larger.
The analytical answer is a bit more complicated.
When discussing screen sizes, I don’t think you can ignore the elephant in the room – Apple – which limits its product line and does a lot of thinking and experimenting before launching anything. Apple believes that 3.5” is the perfect screen size, and they’ve sold over 100 million iPhones with that screen size, so it’s hard to argue that they’re widely off the mark. But I will say that as long as you keep the dimensions small with minimal bezel and a thin case I think you can comfortably go to 3.7” without any negative impact on holdability whatsoever. If you asked me what the ideal screen would be, a high pixel density 3.7” display would be it.
Screen sizes of 4” – 4.3” push the limit of what is comfortable to hold — and cross that line for many consumers. While this size is too big for some users, it does appeal to people looking for the biggest possible screen. There can also be retail marketing benefits to this screen size: these devices stand out on the shelf, and poorly trained retail sales staff often gravitate to them as hero devices (even if smaller screened devices are more technically sophisticated).
With this size display, case thickness and tapering matter as much as the display size itself: HTC’s 4.3” Thunderbolt and Samsung’s 4” EPIC 4G (which has a sliding QWERTY) are both bulky, while the 4” Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 is quite manageable.
Above 4.3” is too big. I have seen a phone with a 4.5” display in an exceptionally thin case that almost works, and the retail marketing bump it will get is probably significant. However, its size excludes half the population (how many woman will want to carry a phone that large?) so I would consider it a niche size at best.
The 5” devices I’ve used are not only too big, they are also too small. Once you get beyond the 4 – 4.25” size, the promise is that you’ll get a better browsing experience. But browsing doesn’t really get better until you hit at least 7”, and you need to get to 9” before you can comfortably see a whole page without scrolling (or squinting) in portrait orientation.
Devices with a 5” display are not just uncomfortable to hold to your face as a phone, they make you look a bit ridiculous when doing it. However, 5” does offer a significantly better media and navigation experience than 4”, so dedicated GPS devices with 5” screens make a lot of sense. For example, Samsung’s 5” Galaxy Player (which I played with recently) could make a lot of sense if Samsung makes it easy to get movies and TV on the device.

It was at Intel’s booth rather than Samsung’s at Mobile World Congress where we got our hands on the Samsung SWD-M100 Mobile Internet Device, and while the unit they had to play with was mysteriously non-functional, the hardware is certainly promising.  Hidden behind a 4.3-inch touchscreen there’s a full slide-down QWERTY keyboard, together with WiFi b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 and – its crowning glory – WiMAX.

Ironically, given the state of WiMAX availability in the US right now, integrating it into the SWD-M100 smacks both of foresight and foolishness.  Frankly an HSDPA connection would be more useful, but at least if Samsung can bring it to market sooner rather than later it might make a fitting replacement to the recently-retired Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition Internet Tablet.
Just as the N810 runs a cut-down mobile OS, so does the Samsung MID: they’ve picked Windows Mobile 6.1, together with the Opera browser, to go with the SWD-M100′s accelerometer-controlled auto-rotation, dual-cameras (3-megapixels on the back, 0.3-megapixels up front for video chats) and microSD memory card slot.  There’s also a TV output connection.
No word on availability or price, but we’re hoping to at least see a working prototype before too long.

How To Install Garmin XT on Nokia

I recently bought a Nokia  and asked if the shop keeper could install Garmin XT for me. Guess what? He wants to charge RM 80 (USD 20) for that!



It turns out, it is pretty tough considering my lack of expertise when it comes to Symbian OS phones. I spent 3 days experimenting all possibilities to make it work on my phone. Since it took a lot of my time, I’m going to save yours by teaching you.

Before you do anything, and read all the instructions before hand. It’ll help you to visualize the process.

1. Setting up Apparatus, The Nokia

   1. Back up all data using PC Suite (go to Nokia website).
   2. Soft reset by pressing *#7370#. Should take about 2-3 mins and you lose all your data (except on memory card). But don’t worry, you have back up remember?
   3. On your Nokia  go to Application > Location > Positioning > Positioning Methods. Enable “Assisted GPS” and “Integrated GPS” ONLY. This will ensure you don’t get charge using WAP or 3G network for Internet.
   4. Go to Application > Location > GPS Data > Position > Options > Satellite status. This will show the satellite signals you’re receiving. Be sure you are outdoor in an open area. Balcony doesn’t work well, believe me I’ve tried. Once you’ve got AT LEAST 4 satellite signal, go back indoor, you don’t want people to think you’re crazy, waving your phone around.
   5. Now you’re ready for GarminXT.

2. Installing GarminXT on Nokia

   1. Once you’ve downloaded, unzip the files to someplace accessible preferably on your desktop.
   2. Connect your phone via USB and select  ‘Mass storage mode’.
   3. From you PC, double click “GarminMobileXTforSymbianS603rdEdition_50040.exe” to install and wait.
   4. Double click “GarminMobileXTFreeBasemap_4xxxx.exe” to install. Wait..
   5. Double click “GarminMobileXTSupportFiles_4xxxx.exe” to install.
   6. Remove USB connection between PC and phone. When prompted ‘Launch GarminXT’ do not click Yes, just Cancel.
   7. From your phone, go to Menu > Settings > Application Manager > Installation files. There should be GarminXT.sis file. Install it.

3. Cracking GarminXT on Nokia

   1. Tell yourself and say “Yes, I’m a cheapskate”.
   2. Run GarminXT from your phone at Menu > Application > Garmin. It will prompt you with some settings. Choose your preferable.
   3. Select “Use other device” when it prompts you to buy or trial. You will get a screen, “Where To?” and “View map”
   4. In GarminXT, go to Tools > Settings > About. Jot down “Card ID”, you will need it. Exit GarminXT
   5. On your PC, run “garmin_kgen.exe” and enter the “Card ID” from previous steps.
   6. Generate it and you will get a string of codes. Copy the codes to Notepad and save it as “sw.unl”. *Be sure you don’t save it as sw.unl.txt”*
   7. Connect your phone to PC and select “Mass storage mode”.
   8. Copy “sw.unl” to Garmin folder. Usually located at E:/Garmin.
   9. Copy “gmapsupp.img” from downloaded file to Garmin folder. “gmapsupp.img” is the Malaysian map.
  10. Disconnect your phone from PC.

4. Restore your Nokia

   1. Reconnect your phone via PC Suite.
   2. Restore your settings through back up.

5. Setting up GarminXT on Nokia

   1. You don’t need your PC anymore. Shut down and conserve energy.
   2. Run GarminXT on your phone.
   3. Go to Tools > Settings > System > Remote GPS. Change to “Use Attached GPS” by disabling the “Bluetooth GPS”.
   4. Go to Tools > Manage My Data > Map Sets > MapSource. Make sure all maps are enabled.

6. Toying GarminXT on Nokia

   1. Switch off your fans and lights. Go out.
   2. Run GarminXT, (duh!).
   3. Select “View Map” and wait for a while. The satellite will find you. It took me 5 mins or so. Just have patience and faith.
   4. Now you’ll see where you are.
   5. Go back and select “Where To?”. If you’re at home and wants GarminXT to store you current location as home, then select “Home”
   6. “Where To?” is rather confusing. I usually use “Where To?” > Point of interest. There’s lots of shopping malls, hospitals, banks, ATM machines etc. from there, you’d know where to go.
   7. Pat yourself and say “Well done”. The rest is up to you.

Better Memory Chips

  

Engineering scientists at the University of Michigan have found a way to improve the performance of ferroelectric materials, which have the potential to make memory devices with more storage capacity than magnetic hard drives and faster write speed and longer lifetimes than flash memory.

In ferroelectric memory the direction of molecules' electrical polarization serves as a 0 or a 1 bit. An electric field is used to flip the polarization, which is how data is stored.

With his colleagues at U-M and collaborators from Cornell University, Penn State University, and University of Wisconsin, Madison, Xiaoqing Pan, a professor in the U-M Department of Materials Science and Engineering, has designed a material system that spontaneously forms small nano-size spirals of the electric polarization at controllable intervals, which could provide natural budding sites for the polarization switching and thus reduce the power needed to flip each bit.

"To change the state of a ferroelectric memory, you have to supply enough electric field to induce a small region to switch the polarization. With our material, such a nucleation process is not necessary," Pan said. "The nucleation sites are intrinsically there at the material interfaces".

To make this happen, the engineers layered a ferroelectric material on an insulator whose crystal lattices were closely matched. The polarization causes large electric fields at the ferroelectric surface that are responsible for the spontaneous formation of the budding sites, known as "vortex nanodomains".

The scientists also mapped the material's polarization with atomic resolution, which was a key challenge, given the small scale. They used images from a sub-angstrom resolution transmission electron microscope at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. They also developed image processing software to accomplish this.

"This type of mapping has never been done," Pan said. "Using this technique, we've discovered unusual vortex nanodomains in which the electric polarization gradually rotates around the vortices".
